Purpose of study

All children at Bishop Wilson C of E Primary School receive a broad and balanced PE curriculum regardless of year group or ability. Every child accesses all of the key areas of the subject on offer at our school. Teachers plan PE with clear progression of skills and knowledge that we have devised as part of our curriculum offer to ensure that all children access it at an age appropriate level. Festivals and competitions ensure all of our children have the opportunity to take part in arrange of sports both in and outside of school whether that be at a competitive or non-competitive level.

Through PE we interweave our drivers in as many ways as possible.  For example:

Communicators- Children will explore how to give instructions to others so they will then understand how to perform an activity successfully. They will also be given the opportunity to communicate their self-assessment of an activity they have taken part in.

Explorers- Children will and take part in different types of physical activity and explore their strengths and how they could improve.

Reading- We encourage children to read new vocabulary relating to instructions and rules. They learn words from different PE genre - dance, games and gymnastics at KS 1. Dance, games and gymnastics plus swimming, water safety and athletics in KS2.

Believers- All children are able to perform activities to their best ability and have a belief they can improve with practice and participation. They learn through different means, and all have the opportunity to take part in Sports / Activities they haven’t had chance to previously e.g Archery, football, rounders cricket and netball.

Scheme of Work

We follow the Complete PE Scheme of Work which gives the children the opportunity to learn in a fun, exciting and engaging lessons.

Implementation of Curriculum

EYFS

Pupils within EYFS undertake daily physical exercise within a specialised external play area, including the recent development of the outdoor provision. They also have use of the fully equipped sports and school hall for structured activities at least once a week. Cross curricular links enable PE activities to take place during literacy and maths.

Key Stage 1

All pupils from Year 1 to 2 have at least 2 hours’ worth of planned physical exercise each week. Teachers plan and deliver lessons focussing on the development of the children’s fundamental movement skills (balance, agility, co-ordination, running, jumping and catching). The teaching of lifestyle behaviours helps the children to understand what it means to be healthy and this embedded in the sequence of learning.

Key Stage 2

All pupils from Year 3 to 6 have at least 2 hours’ worth of planned physical exercise each week and participate in blocks of swimming lessons to enable them to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 meters. Pupils continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills such as running, jumping, throwing and catching. These skills are incorporated into competitive games, performances using movement patterns and evaluations of their own and others’ work. Pupils communicate and collaborate with each other and develop an understanding of how to improve in physical activities. There are many opportunities across the year for children to take part in inter and intra school competitions, as well as festivals, where children’s successes in sports are celebrated.
